Before We Were People

by Nightsinger of First Pack

Listen, pack-friends to my song,
of the way things were before,
before we could think,
before we could speak,
before we were people,
in the eyes of others.

It is not full-true we could not think,
and always we could sing,
they did not understand our thoughts,
they did not hear the words we spoke,
so we were not people,
in the eyes of others.

The war was vicious then as now,
too many died that should have lived,
from orders ill-thought,
from wounds uncared for,
because we were not people,
in the eyes of others.

Then she altered our minds,
and we grew into what we are,
we learned to think,
we learned to speak,
and we became people,
in the eyes of others.

When we became people,
they had to treat us as people,
because we could think,
because we could speak,
because we were people,
in the eyes of others.

When we became people,
they were angry with her,
because we could think,
because we could speak,
because we were people,
and they must treat us as such.

When we became people,
they tried her and killed her,
because we could think,
because we could speak,
though we were people,
they did not listen to us.

When we asked to spare her,
abomination! they cried,
although we could think,
although we could speak,
although we were people,
our songs went unheard.

I will still sing out,
the truth they deny:
we can think,
we can speak,
we are people,
and we say she should not have died.

Note to the reader: this learning song has recently been banned on the orders of the High King.

This poem is part of the same imaginary universe as Token Wolf on Council and several other stories you haven’t seen yet.  There’s a lot more where this came from.
